Things I Learned at His Hill

Image
Hi there feiend, It's already been a few months since I left Texas and His Hill. Since then, I have been working hard to finish my Bible school classes online. I officially graduated last week. I've had a lot of time to think and reminisce about my time in Texas hill country and everything I learned on that blessed hilltop. I'd like to share with you some of the life-changing lessons I picked up there. It takes God in man for man to be the man that God made man to be. This phrase was forever etched into my brain. It was something that we were told at the very beginning of the year but was repeated and driven home throughout the year. When God made humans He made us to have HIs Spirit dwell within us. We were designed to live in harmony with God. Yet, our sin separated us from Him. The only way for us to be the people God designed us to be is to allow the spirit to live in and through us. " However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spi...

Power and Humility

Image
Hey there, A while back I had to write a paper for one of my classes. Nothing big. Just one page about a person or event in 1 or 2 Samuel that stood out to me, spoke to me or taught me something. I thought I might as well share it with you. 2 Samuel 7:18-19a Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far? And yet this was insignificant in your eyes, O Lord God, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. First and Second Samuel have been some of my favorite books to study in class so far because they are so full of beautiful and encouraging stories. How was I to choose just one to write about? For my interactive paper, I originally chose to write about 1 Samuel 24:5 which speaks of David’s strong conscience after cutting off a corner of Saul’s robe in a cave. However, as I read and reread and wrote and rewrote our memory verse from ...

Fear and a Unicycle

Image
Hey there, Today I wanted to tell you a story about a unicycle and what that unicycle did for me recently. This unicycle that I recently discovered in the storage room in the gym here at His Hill helped me address two of my character flaws. I was well aware of these character flaws and how debilitating there were. But this unicycle was a turning point for one of them in particular. Let me give a little background to my story before I begin. As I child I was extremely outgoing and confident. I was unapologetically me. I was fearless and courageous. I loved to climb trees, build forts, run around and explore the great outdoors. And I did it all wearing my favorite pink sparkly skirt and a tie-dye t-shirt. If I wanted to do something, I did it. If my sister or friend could do something, so could I. I was bubbly, always smiling and very extroverted. I had many friends and loved my life! My sister (AKA: my adventure buddy) and I as youngins.  But, when I was ten years old ...

Lessons from The Hill

Image
Hi there, Sorry that I've been absent from here this past month. I know some people really want to know how I'm doing. I am doing SO incredibly well! I love it here at His Hill. This past month has been a whirlwind. It's been so crazy and fun and busy and hectic and wonderful. Texas hill country is beautiful. This campus is so fun. I just love my dorm and roommates. And most of all I've been loving my classes. I wanted to share a little bit of what I've been learning.  Thus far we have done Genesis through to Joshua as well as Romans. We have had a class on theological terms and even an etiquette class which I thoroughly enjoyed! We just finished a class on Bible study methods along with it all. Right now we are working on Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel. Our teachers have been so wonderful. Usually, each week we have one guest speaker and two resident teachers. On an average day, we start the day off with Chapel which is worship and then someone will share thei...

Month Two: Do More Better

Image
Hi there, February is officially over now and March has begun. For month two of this year, I read Do More Better by Tim Challies. I actually procrastinated and read it over the past week and a half. It has 108 pages and ten chapters plus 11 pages of bonus content. So, it's really not a very long or large book. But, it was pretty good and here's why. The book is 'a practical guide to productivity' . It gives you a Christ centred perspective and guidance on productivity. the first few chapters are about what it means to be productive and why we should be and why?  "Productivity is effectively stewarding your gifts, talents, time, energy and enthusiam for the good of others and the glory of God."   -Tim Challies The next few chapters are about defining your responsibilities and your mission. This is super helpful because it helped me to see exactly what I have on my plate which really helps in knowing how to be productive in my specific life....

A Child's Trust For Their Father

Image
Hey there, So, the other day I saw a man pushing his son in a stroller through a park. They got to a road with a large drop down from the curb. The father was concentrating, trying hard to gently lower his son safely to the road below. The toddler strapped in inside was just staring blankly at the sky above without a worry in the world. He was just chilling there probably dreaming about the shapes of the clouds and the dinosaur he could see in them. He didn't seem to realize that his father behind him was working so hard to keep him safe and comfortable. He had such a total and oblivious trust that his father would take care of him. His father had total and complete control of the little boy's life yet he trusted him fully with it. You know when a father throws their child high into the air, then catching them as the child giggles and screams with joy? Imagine the amount of trust that that child had for their father in that moment. Children trust their parents to take care o...

A Little Encouragement from 1 Corinthians

Image
Hey there, I’m not writing today because it Valentine’s Day and I have a sappy love post (even though we are all incredibly loved by the God of the universe!) No, to be honest,I’m just here because I’m trying to post every week and I posted on Wednesday last week. So, here we are. I'm also here because I wanted to share what God has been teaching me while I've been absent from my blog. This is going to be a verse filled blog post. So, if you want you can read along with me. I'll be using my NIV Bible. I'll also be using the notes I took during my devotions. So, you’ll get a little glimpse into how I personally study the Bible. The verse we'll be looking at is found in 1 Corinthians again. I start by reading it, writing it down, highlighting it (with a color code I have), circling words to define, box string or important word,  underlining words to cross-reference and just mark it up however I desire. Here’s what that looks like. First of all, I love thi...

Wonderful Water

Image
Hey there, It's the rainy season at the moment which means it rains all the time. Sometimes every day and sometimes for hours on end. This floods the streets and creates mud on the bottom of our shoes. We have to ride our bicycles home from ministry in the pooring rain. However, this has created many adventures. We have gone to get pancakes in the rain. We have raced through puddles. We have gone swimming in lakes almost overflowing. Some of my favorite memories with the team have invloved this plentiful water.  One Rainy Day A bunch of us were once eating out at a restaurant when it started to rain. This was no small drizzle either. I did not particularly want to go out in the rain on our bicyles to get home. I was not a fan of being in a soaking dress that clings to my body. We had a time that we had to be back at the house for and time was running out. But, there was no other way to get home so I gave in and went head first into the rain. I got soaked very quickly We e...

17 Things I've Learnt in 17 Years

Image
Dear Reader, My birthday was while ago now but in June I turned 17 years old! Yep, I've been blessed with over 17 years old living now. I am by far not the wisest person out there and I have a lot still to learn but everyone always has something to teach you and so today I thought I'd share with you 17 things I've learned in my 17 years of living. These are in no particular order; just the order in which they're coming to me as I write them now and there are some photos sprinkled in there just to break everything up and so you can see the beautiful faces of our students again :D  1. If you have ants in your sugar put it in the sun for a while and the ants will leave on their own because they don't like the heat . Lee May taught me this one day when we were baking together and I found a whole bunch of ants in my white sugar. It's a very handy trick if you live in Cambodia.  2. It takes more courage and self confidants to cover my body instead of sh...
