Between Worlds

Image
Hi there, I recently read a blog post called Writing with borrowed words which I highly recommend reading. It's about a multilingual woman and the beauty of it and also the struggles it comes with. As I read I thought about the ways I could relate to this woman but also about how our journies differ. So, I thought I'd write about it, about how so often I find myself drifting between worlds. I have been given many titles throughout my life; girl, dyslexic, Christian, Australian, Canadian, French, English, missionary kid and third culture kid to name a few. Some of these labels describe all of me. I am a girl and I am a Christian. Others only describe a part of me and who I am. Yes, I am Australian... but not fully. Yes, I am French... but not fully either. This often left me feeling like I was between worlds. Especially as a teenager, I felt like I could never fully identify with anyone.  Canada day spent celebrating at a friend's cottage! I believe this sens...

Re-entry and Reverse Culture Shock Five Months In

Image
Hi there, I moved here to Cambridge, Ontario, Canada just over five months ago from Battambang, Cambodia where my family serve as missionaries. I lived there with them and serving with them for about three and a half years. So, when I moved back to the west I prepared myself for re-entry and reverse culture shock. I wrote a whole post about it too. Click here to read it. But after five months of living here how have I adapted?  In my original blog post, I wrote about disorientation and disassociation. That has definitely stayed the same. Well, the disorientation went away but I definitely still disassociate. I have many homes; Australia, Cambodia, Texas, Quebec, Ontario. Home to me is more about the people, the familiarity and the way I feel safe in a place. It’s more about how I feel than actual place itself. Each of my homes are extremely separated in my mind. It’s almost as if they don’t exist simultaneously. I’m not sure why this happened. I tend to be very present whe...

Fequently Asked Questions and My Answers

Image
Hi there, As missionaries we often get asked many questions when we meet new people and often they are the same questions. So, today I thought I would answer some of the most common ones. Let's go! 1. Where are you from? I am half Canadian (Dad) and half Australian (Mum). I was born in Canada but soon after moved to Australia. We lived 10 years in Australia and then 4 in Canada. 2. How long have you been here for? We got here in April of 2015. So, we have been here for about a year and three months now. 3. And how long will you be here for? We don't know. We have no set date or even year. As long as God wants us to be here we will be here. I have to finish school before I though. So, I have at least a year and a half to two years left. 4. So how do you do school? I do distance education. I attend Brisbane School of Distance Education. It's all online. So, I have classmates, different teachers for each subject and I have to attend classes at a ...

Things People Don't Tell You About Being a Missionary

Image
So, this is my first time being a missionary (And I hope it's not my last). But there was very little and I new about being a missionary when we first came here. So here are some of the things I was not prepared for when becoming a missionary. You will be lonely; Since leaving Canada I have learnt who my real friends are which has resulted in me letting go of some false friends which has been great! I have made a few really good friends that I have grown closer to. But it is very hard not being about to actually be with them. I can't hug them, have a coffee with them or laugh with them. I love them, but I do get lonely. We really appreciate it when people send us letters or emails, Skype with us and just don't forget about us! Things won't go as expected; Yes, that's right. Plans don't go to plan and some things just don't happen. It's hard when things are unpredictable but going into things we are learning to expect the unexpected. Sometimes plans w...
